Privacy Awareness Week 2018

Last Updated:

Xuveo Legal is proud to be a supporter of Privacy Awareness Week 2018.

PAW2018 runs from 13-19 May and celebrates the theme "Privacy: From Principles to Practice"

2018 also marks 30 years since the enactment of the Australian Privacy Act 1988. Much has changed in technology and communications since then, yet the Act still functions to guide businesses and protect individuals' personal information.

This year has already seen a number of significant developments in Privacy, including:

  • the Facebook / Cambridge Analytica privacy breach;
  • commencement of the mandatory Notifiable Data Breach reporting regime in Australia, which requires businesses bound by the Privacy Act to report breaches to both the government and to affected consumers;
  • the EU's adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which substantially overhauls privacy protection for the European Union and has far-reaching implications for businesses with an EU footprint.

As individuals, PAW2018 presents the reminder to contemplate how we manage and safeguard our own personal information. With whom do we share our information? How much do we share? Are we oversharing?

For businesses, consider what information flows are in your organisation? How do you inform consumers about how you will protect their information? How will you build the trust of your customers?
